The 248t MARF brings one of Don Buchla’s most expressive and idiosyncratic control structures into the Eurorack ecosystem, faithfully realized by Tiptop Audio in collaboration with Buchla. Short for Multiple Arbitrary Function Generator, the MARF is not just a sequencer—it’s a deeply programmable voltage sculpting instrument that blurs the line between sequencing, modulation, and performance.
At its core, the 248t offers two independent but interrelated channels: one for timing and one for voltage, each composed of 16 stages. Unlike traditional step sequencers, each stage in the MARF can define both how long it lasts and what voltage it outputs, allowing for sequences that breathe, stretch, and evolve organically. The result is a system capable of everything from tightly controlled rhythmic patterns to fluid, almost gestural modulation curves.
What sets the MARF apart is its non-linear, addressable architecture. Stages can be accessed sequentially, randomly, or by external control voltages, opening the door to complex branching structures and pseudo-generative behavior. With voltage control over stage selection, direction, and timing, the 248t becomes less of a fixed sequencer and more of a compositional tool—ideal for building evolving patches that feel alive.
The hands-on interface stays true to the Buchla philosophy: immediate, tactile, and performance-ready. Sliders for each stage provide direct access to voltage levels, while dedicated controls for timing and addressing make it easy to reshape sequences on the fly. Whether used as a precision sequencer, a complex envelope generator, or a source of animated CV, the MARF rewards experimentation at every turn.
Part of the growing Buchla & Tiptop 200t series, the 248t translates a historically significant design into a modern Eurorack format—retaining the spirit and functionality of the original while integrating seamlessly into contemporary systems.
